My Favorite Summer Plants

My Favorite Summer Plants

Summer is for being outside in the Pacific Northwest. I LOVE summer! Kids out of school, bar-b-ques…and especially my gardens and yard. This year, since we are building our new house, I have redone all of my flower beds. We not only reused a good many plants from my old flowerbeds but we also found some fun new ones. Here are some of my 2016 plant picks to include in your garden.

Spiderwort

SPIDERWORT

This variety is “Sweet Kate”. Beautiful sweet little Iris-like blue flowers bloom all over this Chartreuse green grass foliage. It prefers Sun to Part shade and is a perennial.

hosta

HOSTA

“Mouse Ear” Hosta grows in a mass of bluish-green. I love all Hostas but this is one I recently discovered, and it is a great one to add to your garden. As with most Hostas, they like shadier areas, but I have had success growing them just about anywhere.

tree peony

TREE PEONIES

Ideal because they have a woodier stem and their structure will allow for enormous flowers that have branches that will hold them up without having to stake them up. Eventually tree Peonies can be 3-7ft tall.

hydrangea

LIMELIGHT HYDRANGEAS

LOVE the color of these blooms and they truly grow fairly quickly. I love to plant these in a mass as a hedge. Great, showy, large, greenish-cream blooms that bloom into the fall.

delphinium

DELPHINIUM

This variety is called “Black-Eyed Angels” it also come in a blue version of the Angel’s variety that make a very showy statement mixed together and always planted in masses. Most Delphinium in the Pacific Northwest will need staking, but they are a truly spectacular flower for your garden displays.
